and what about when in a few short months buddie shares another loaded meaningful glance. and then all of a sudden we're running through 8 seasons worth of flashbacks in 911's fuckass greyscale and music is swelling behind the scenes that have been gif'd and edited to hell and back for years: whatta man, couch scenes, the tsunami, the lightning strike and the well and the shooting, the one look from 501, chris and the skateboard, the kitchen. and then the flashback ends and they're leaning in. WHAT THEN.

if characters don't change, as Tim said (and only God knows what he meant by that, but I'm choosing an optimistic..ish interpretation here), then Buck will still risk his life to save someone he loves, because he still thinks he's expendable. and Tommy will still join suicide missions, because he will never not have someone's back.

so Buck will do anything to save Maddie from her kidnapper, like volunteering to trade places with her. and then Tommy will join the rescue efforts and volunteer as bait to lure the kidnapper. but that works too well and he ends up being kidnapped too. he awakes in a basement, sitting down against a pole, his hands tied to it behind his back. he opens his eyes and straightens his head and he hears that voice he has missed so much and he was so terrified of never hearing again: "T-tommy! Are you ok?"

and there's nothing else to do but talk, so they do.

tommy calling buck ‘evan’ during their entire relationship and the first, and only time, he calls him buck is after he breaks up with him. eddie calling buck ‘evan’ only once and it was when he gave buck his goddamn son. the only time tommy called him buck was before leaving and the only time eddie called him evan was when he gave buck proof of him and chris staying. of them wanting buck. of them keeping buck. id say “which could meaning nothing!” but it actually means everything.

i hope buck, eddie and shannon are haunting helena through chris rn. i hope when chris rolls his eyes and snarks back helena freezes reminding her damn well who his father is. i hope when chris bites the inside of cheek and is suddenly really interested in his hands when he’s nervous about something helena scrunches her eyebrows in confusion bc she swears she’s seen it before and her eyes widen as she recalls eddie’s friend, the same friend who was there when they picked up chris, having the same mannerisms when eddie and his team came to texas. i hope when chris asks for the ice cream from the store 45 minutes from their house near the park and he picks rocky road helena swallows roughly bc shannon would do the same when she missed eddie and/or was sad. i hope she’s violently reminded no matter how much she pretends, that child will never be hers in the way she’s so desperately been trying to make it be for years. i hope she’s reminded of her damn place in chris’ life.

Something about even when Tommy is taking care of Buck there being this distance between them, Tommy is on the couch and turning off the lights while Buck is still trying to talk, Tommy is in the foreground of Buck having another “who are you without your family” moment in a graveyard, Tommy in the hospital, wearing a visitor badge, close but never touching, there but never there.

Something about Tommy being all over this episode and still barely there at all. He is in Buck- Evan’s- life but he’s not in it, he’s on the outside, always behind this invisible fence

Something about Buck telling Tommy- his BOYFRIEND- Tommy all about this curse and this story, but it’s Eddie who has to explain the holes in the story Buck doesn’t know he’s leaving

Something about Buck being the one we’re shown to get Hens text about Denny, signally everyone else in that room, that family, who got that text except for Tommy, Tommy having to ask what had happened, having to be explained that everything was going to be okay

He is there but he is not, he’s in the room but he’s not apart of it

Something about only dreaming about finding a love like that, something about “you don’t find it son, you make it”

Something about Buck constantly trying to make it work with people, trying to force it to work with people because that what he thinks he meant, because love is work right? It’s something you make work

Something about him always misunderstanding the assignment

Something about the last time Buck was in a graveyard he was shoulder to shoulder with Eddie, talking about how a girl he just met sees him, all the while leaning on Eddie in the aftermath of his death he has accepted but never understood

Something about him telling Tommy that the night they met being the most fun he’s had since dying, something about how he connects Tommy and Natalia to an event neither where there for, as two people who can never understand the horror of those 3 minutes and 17 seconds

Something about Buck throwing himself into danger and adrenaline time after time and chasing relationships that feel like that because that’s love right? Something that feels like being struck by lightening and surviving and non of the side effects

Something about Buck not being able to sleep after his death until he sits on Eddie’s couch, Eddie is the person he comes too for when he’s restless, for the calm after the storm

Something about “it’s about how she makes me feel” “like you’re flying high” “like I’m standing on solid ground”

Something about Tommy being jealous of the 118 and the family they’ve built because he’s not apart of it, and a part of him knows he never will be

Because the roles have all been filled and the family has already been made and he is trying to build something with Buck- Evan- thats already been built

Let’s talk about the fact that Eddie set up a meeting with a real estate agent to look at houses in El Paso. Let’s talk about how he didn’t once mention to anyone that he was even thinking about moving closer to Christopher. Let’s talk about how the only reason Buck found out was because he literally walked in on Eddie browsing houses, and Eddie still had the audacity to flip the tablet shut and try to act like nothing was going on.

Eddie never planned for Buck to find out about that meeting. He definitely didn’t plan for Buck to jump on it with him. But how long, really, did Eddie think he could keep this all under wraps? Did he seriously believe he could just buy a house in El Paso, pack up his life, and casually drop that bomb on everyone later? Just like that?

And here’s the thing: we know Eddie. We’ve seen him do this before. He makes these impulsive, all-or-nothing decisions—joining the army, quitting his job, deciding he’s fine when he’s absolutely not, meeting up with his dead wife doppelganger, even the desicion to move to LA in the first place—and then, when it all catches up to him, he starts to question it.
